Huge problem with rats in Birmingham

Over 60,000 complaints have been made over the last few years to Birmingham Council regarding the presence of rats in streets, homes and gardens. The highest number of complaints came from the Washwood Heath area, with over 3000 during the period from January 2008 to December 2010. Escorts in Birmingham acknowledged that rats can be a problem, and the council must do more to eradicate this pest.

Another two regions where rats seem to be a big problem are Bordesley Green and Soho with between 2600 and 2900 complaints each. It is believed much of the problem is caused by the presence of takeaways and rubbish in the street. However, in Birmingham as a whole about three quarters of the complaints were actually made about rats in gardens, rather than in the street or in houses.

Rats are not just an unsightly nuisance; they are also known to transfer a dangerous illness called Leptospirosis, also known as Weil’s disease. This illness can actually be fatal but more commonly causes flu-like symptoms. Obviously, those with small children are more aware of the dangers, and are keen to do away with the vermin.

Back to Washwood Heath, and town centre manager, Mushtaq Hussain, believes that the problem is caused by a having a densely populated area combined with a very busy high street. Having a large number of visitors making use of the numerous takeaways in the area means there are more food scraps on the street for the rats to feed on.

The most recent figures do not just detail the problem of rats in the city. Also covered were jobs carried out by pest control regarding bedbugs, cockroaches, fleas, wasps and even ants. With the pest control department being so busy, it doesn't help that with local cuts, Washwood Heath alone lost many environmental wardens and neighbourhood officers this year.
